A quality home battery system typically costs $8,000–$16,000 installed, depending on capacity, brand and whether you need backup capability. Popular options like the Tesla Powerwall 2 sit around $12,000–$14,000 fully installed. Your installer will recommend the right size based on your usage and solar system.

No, but it makes the most financial sense when paired with solar. A battery without solar can still save you money by charging from the grid during off-peak hours and discharging during peak, but the real savings come from storing free solar energy. If you don't have solar yet, many installers will quote you for both together.
